DJI Mic review

The DJI Mic is a clever system that is portable, easy to use, and offers good sound quality for the price. It's flexible, easy to use and allows for sharp, clear and wind-free recordings.

In the modern world, sound is an important component of content development. Your voice will represent who you are whether you’re recording for a podcast, YouTube channel, Twitch stream, or an interview. The location of the recording can also have a significant impact on the audio. Although viewers are accustomed to watching videos with poor camera quality, the majority of the time they abandon up if the audio is poor. So, we put the new DJI Mic to the test to see if it really does create excellent sound quality.

Although DJI pretty much thought of everything, a pair of lava microphones would make this setup almost ideal. The transmitters and receivers are incredibly light and clip-on anywhere you need them, but because of their peculiar shapes, they are difficult to conceal while recording and cause cloth to bend. The DJI Mic is a superb wireless system that rivals the Rode Wireless Go II for content creators.

This is a very useful mic setup for just about everyone, in typical DJI Mic manner. Its clean audio, simple gain adjustments to avoid clipping, and innovative, self-contained charging case give it an advantage over rivals. It’s an excellent option for recording and content creation while on the go because it works with a wide variety of devices.

Although our enormous sausage fingers don’t help, the DJI Mic Receiver screen can be problematic at times despite being simple to operate. You’ll find yourself making quick modifications on the spot after you learn the swiping motions required to navigate the device. Making the switch from mono to stereo or deciding which transmitter will serve as your right or left mic becomes simple.

For quick access for makers and to prevent inadvertent presses, simply hit the power button to lock and unlock the screen. You can check your audio levels by gazing at the screen, which shows the input levels of both microphones. On the side, there is a 3.5mm audio connection. The transmitters are small, attractive, and simple to attach to garments with a clothing clip.

The clips may be used to clip the devices to objects or metal surfaces in addition to magnetically attaching to the units. Again, it can be challenging to hide them, but given how little and unobtrusive they are, having the receiver in the shot is probably not a major concern if it’s an interview or if you are a solo YouTube maker. Two windscreens are also included in the set; these can be snapped onto or off of the receivers and are quite effective at blocking out wind noise and unwelcome background noise.

The clips are the ideal size to snugly fit in the hot shoe of your camera, allowing you to start recording as soon as you insert it, mike your subject. The DJI Mic has an excellent and well-thought-out overall design, and the charging case truly transforms it into a genuine all-in-one gadget by housing everything you want.

You can only begin listening to the audio from the recording once the transmitter has been turned off. The DJI Mic can only be used in mono mode after that. The iPhone’s speaker is disabled when the mics are connected, and despite the manual’s claim that Bluetooth headphones can be used to listen to audio, we were unable to do so.

So, the only practical way to listen to audio while recording to an iPhone is to plug wired headphones into the receiver’s headphone jack. Additionally, we discovered that the magnetically attached adapter might sometimes go out of alignment with the receiver and lose connection. Two excellent microphones, a receiver, a charging case, and all the necessary adapters and cables for connecting to your camera, computer, and phone are all included in the bundle.

The system is easy to use and recordings come out clear, but some design choices, such as the complicated Record and Link buttons on the transmitters, are puzzling. Also, the system is capable of mono recordings only when used with the iPhone’s Lightning adapter, rather than stereo with a USB-C or 3.5 mm connection.

The DJI Mic also has excellent audio quality. The one place it struggled was inside with a lot of background noise (my noisy computer), but the quality improved as we moved away from the noise. The microphones are susceptible to these issues because they are not unidirectional, but you may turn on a low-cut filter to significantly reduce noise. The windshields did a wonderful job of reducing wind noise, and they never came undone. A different lavalier mic was also added, and everything functioned as predicted with no sound quality loss.

The safety channel mode, a separate track that can record with a volume of -6DB and prevents the sound from being distorted by sudden loud noise, can also be activated via the receiver’s touchscreen. The microphone system is excellent for recording voices, and improves greatly when the low-cut filter is activated, which reduces noise and vibration. it records audio with good clarity, allows audio to be recorded up to 250 meters away, and prevents wind from degrading the audio. Considering all recording possibilities,

The DJI Mic in two different ways: as a stand-alone recorder to which I would then transfer WAV files and as a wireless microphone that would transmit the audio live to Logic Pro. The audio quality of the two approaches was identical: both produced crystal-clear speech free of annoying background noise. The windscreens provided worked well to reduce wind. The DJI Mic can be used in four different ways: as a small hand-held microphone, as a camera mount, as a camera microphone placed close to the subject, or as a clip-on lavalier microphone that attaches with the clip or magnets.

Speaking directly into the DJI microphone produces extraordinarily clear and rich sounds, but doing so while wearing a lavalier microphone is decidedly less surprising. If you already have a high-quality lavalier microphone, you can plug it into the 3.5 mm TRS-in port at the top of the transmitter. The sound was fantastic and far better than one would expect from such a small microphone when placed directly in front of me, but when plugged in, it became substantially squarer and more midrange, with a noticeable drop-off in the higher frequencies.

The receiver and transmitter units of the DJI Mic have a 5.5-hour battery life rating. Because we are noisy, windy pest, we tested this out and it is accurate. It was able to use the system for easily five hours or more before we needed to charge it. Let me just say that you will be able to use the DJI mic all day long because of the extra ten hours of battery life with the charging case.

Nobody talks for 10 hours straight, not even me, so it was able to get a good seventeen hours of recording out of the system. The transmitters and receiver will be put into the case when you move from one location to another between takes, so with those minor top-ups throughout the day, the power life should never be an issue.

Although there is a popular third-party charging case for the Rode Wireless Go II system(opens in new tab), the charging case is a game-changer and the only unmistakable advantage it has over the Rode Wireless Go II system, which let the DJI edge out the Rode Wireless Go II system somewhat.

The DJI Mic provides exceptional audio quality while doing everything it needs to do. The touchscreen makes it quite simple to lower the receiver gain for your device and/or situation to keep things clean, even though you might notice that when you first start recording you’re receiving a considerable amount of clipping. Additionally, if you’re still concerned, you may enable safety channel mode on the receiver’s touchscreen. This separate track records at a volume of -6DB and is an excellent method to stop your audio from being irreparably damaged by a sudden loud noise.

The claimed wireless transmission range is up to 250 meters. Practically speaking, this is as far as you’re ever going to need it to travel. We discovered that we could degrade the quality by being irritating and intentionally blocking the transmitter, but it will work just fine for the vast majority of real-world use cases. Even if there is an issue, the transmitters internally record, so you will still have a clear copy of your audio.

We hope you enjoy our review on DJI Mic. For mobile content producers and vloggers who want something compact but powerful and feature-rich, the DJI Mic is a fantastic choice. The microphone is adaptable, simple to use, and generates clear, wind-free sound. The cost is marginally higher than the going rate for competing microphones like the RODE Wireless Go II.

However, the DJI provides a significant benefit by consolidating everything into a robust charging case and including cutting-edge capability, both of which are well worth the additional cost. The linking and recording buttons on this microphone might be further away, and there should be a low-latency monitoring mode.
