Today's Tech News and Reviews

Even though CES was virtual this year: The new products coming out are still very exciting and fun to see! The Great folks at iClever sent our editorial staff another great pair of kid’s headphones, the iClever BTH13 Cat Ear LED Headphones. They light up, they have adjustable maximum dB levels, and most of all, they are 100% kid-friendly. Let’s look in the box.

The retail box for the iClever BTH 13 Headphones is colorful and fun.  The back cover lists the headphone specifications such as Bluetooth 5.0 and the Bluetooth profiles. Inside the box, you will find the lightweight and colorful Kitty Cat headphones, a 3.5mm patch cable, and a USB C charging cable. Also inside the box is the multi-language instruction manual, and a card containing the information for warranty or returns. The 3.5mm cable is meant to be used when the Li-Polymer battery is discharged so you can keep listening even when the device battery is dead. Remember that the maximum volume limiting, the volume controls, and the LED lights do not work when the BTH13 headphones are directly plugged into a device, and use all due caution to protect your child’s hearing. The headphone controls and all ports are on the right earpiece and in order from bottom to top you’ll find the 3.5mm cable port, the USB C charging port, an indication LED, the sliding power switch, Volume -, Play/Pause, Volume +, and finally the M button which is used to turn the LED light show on/off. Volume is adjusted with quick button clicks and a long press on the -/+ buttons will advance tracks or go to the previous track. These headphones can be adjusted from 74 dB, 85 dB, or 94 dB maximum volume by pressing the Volume – button then pressing the Volume + button slightly after. There is a voice prompt that will guide you through that process as well as indicating Power on/off, Ready to connect to Bluetooth, and Connected to Bluetooth. Pairing is really easy right out of the box: You will see a red/blue led blinking which indicates the device is ready to pair. Look at your phone/tablet/Chromebook Bluetooth menu to choose iClever-BTH13 and you will hear the voice prompt when you’ve connected. Let’s look deeper.

When I opened the box then connected the iClever BTH13 headphones to my Galaxy phone, I was able to see that the headphones arrived with an 80% charge. I used them for 3 days, mostly in standby mode without losing over 10% of the onboard power level. That’s great for parents and kids: up to 45 hours of playtime(with the LED light switched off) from one charge means your child can have days and days of distance learning, music, or videos and video games for days before charging. The headphones are pink with a kitty cat ear design and an LED light show which can be turned on or off at any time while the battery is working. They are designed to be durable enough for kids from 3-16 years of age, and the easy folding headpiece is easily adjustable to fit just about any child’s head. It was a bit tight on my 50-year-old melon. They are made of kid-friendly silicone and won’t harm your child’s sensitive skin. The Controls are easy to find with your right hand and easy to operate. Once you’ve set the maximum volume level as desired these headphones will stay at that level until the right button combination is pressed. The 40 mm driver has a great full-range sound at any of the 3 maximum levels. If these are meant for a younger child 3-5 one would prefer using the 74 dB max, at age 6-12 the 85 dB is perfect and for the older teenage kids a 94 dB level would probably rock their world. Just remember: At that level of sound you’ll want to limit exposure to under an hour to protect your child’s ears. The main power switch turns on the system. If the iClever BTH13  is disconnected from a device or not paired it will automatically shut down in a few minutes to save the battery. The headphones also work great with phone calls or distance learning with a built-in and great sounding microphone. When using the headphones paired with a cell phone the controls change a bit. Volume is still the same but now play/pause will answer or reject calls with short or long presses. You can also activate Siri or similar with 2 clicks of the play/pause button. Finally: to clear the paired devices you can hold the – and + buttons for 4 seconds.

During this very unusual school year, parents across the world are scrambling to ensure their child has a safe, and productive education. For those who are in distance learning the iClever BTH13 Cat Ear Headphones meet a pressing need. They are well made, well thought out, and the ability to adjust maximum volume levels is perfect from age 3-16. The light show is just additional fun and easy enough to turn on/off for a child or adult. I was very happy with the battery life over 3 days. The USB C charging cable allows for really fast charging and the headphones easily paired with my devices whether it was an iPad, iPhone,  Android Tablet, or phone, and especially my child’s school Chromebook. The sound was clear and full range with some thumping bass at the higher Volume limits of 85 dB and 94 dB. The style of the headphones was extremely cute and the multicolor waves of color were just delightful to see on my child’s head. And are Kitty Cat headphones only for kids? Meow… Looking forward to the next great product from iClever in the coming year! 9 out of 10 because audio research demonstrates that 94 dB is too loud for a child’s headphones at any age.
