(WWJ) - For millions of dog owners, summer storms and festive fireworks can cause anxiety, wreaking havoc in our homes. But one woman from Michigan has come up with a possible solution to ease these stressful situations for those four-legged family members.

Kirsten Brand spoke with WWJ's Sandra McNeill about life with her dog, Emma, who suffers from fear of load noises associated with fireworks and thunder and it inspired her to create her company, Pawnix.

"Back in 2017 my own dog ran away during a Petoskey fireworks celebration,” Brand told McNeill.

According lost Pet Statistics, 14% of the 63 million dog owning households in America will experience their pet running away from home in a 5 year span. Among the top four reasons dog run away from home are fear of loud noises.

It is estimated 5 million dogs are lost every year. Pet Tech also estimates 1.2 million dogs are hit and killed by cars on roadways annually.

Brand said they previously tried to combat their pet's fear using a variety a methods, but none were successful.

"We tried calming oils and treats, doggie shirts, playing soothing music, nothing worked for Emma."

Brand eventually found Emma and brought her back home, but she knew she, as well as millions of other households, needed a more permanent solution.

“One day, I just decided to put my own noise canceling headphones on her to see if it would work because I hadn’t found any other good solutions and it did," Brand explained. "I said to myself, I can do this. And if I could make it easier for my own dog, why not make it easier for dogs around the world.”

Brand developed Pawnix, her brand of wireless noise-cancelling noise-canceling headphones specially designed for dogs. She said the material is created from the same foam as headphones human wear at the gun range and offers pet owners an option outside of prescription drugs to manage their dog's stress.

"If you imagine just a large ski mask on their head that kind of looks like a helmet, that's what holds the electronics on their head and also helps to swaddle their entire head a little bit to provide a little more comfort kind of like when you're comforting a baby," Brand said of the device.

Brand said the headsest not only works for fireworks and thunderstors, but any loud sound.

"It takes any loud noise and reduces the volume," she said. "When dogs wear Pawnix, decibels level of loud noises is reduced up to 30 decibels. That means that loud firework shows become the loudness level of a dyson vacuum, or a running dishwasher."

Brand explained to McNeill that seamstresses make half of the headset themselves before they are assembled at her home in Grosse Pointe.

In addition to cancelling out noise, the Bluetooth compatible headphones can also playback comforting music. Brand suggestions music with a slow beat or slow tempo help calm dogs.

"Classical music has worked well in studies, as well as slow paced Reggae. We recommend finding music with out a lot of percussion and traditional drum beats," the company says on their online page.

Pawnix is available for international shipping to the most of the European Union, the UK and Japan.
