JBL offers a variety of headphones for different purposes. They generally have a balanced sound, but you can customize most of them with the companion app if you want a slightly different sound.
The best JBL headphones come in three different styles, and JBL makes models in all three. In-ear phones or earbuds fit perfectly in the ear. They usually have a choice of soft attachments that fit different sizes of the ear canal. They screen out external noise very well. On-ear headphones have earplugs connected by a flexible band that rests lightly on the ear. Even with the best designs, the constant pressure on the ear can become uncomfortable after an hour or more. This design does not screen out ambient noise, which can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the situation.
Around-ear headphones are the most comfortable to wear for a long time and offer excellent noise isolation. They usually offer the best listening experience because the drivers are larger. Most audiophile-quality headphones are of this type. The best JBL headphones offer crystal clear sound and comfortable design with Bluetooth wireless streaming. These headphones are designed to deliver the signature JBL sound with pure bass performance and focus on the lower frequency range.
These noise-canceling wireless over-ears are less expensive than the above club models and also more compact, as they fold up for storage in a jacket pocket or purse. The battery life is impressive: 15 hours with Bluetooth and noise cancellation enabled, 22 hours with Bluetooth only or 30 hours with corded and noise cancellation enabled. In addition, the battery recharges in just two hours.
If you want to conserve battery life by turning off noise cancellation, you will be happy to know that the over-ear design suppresses a lot of noise on its own. The sound is rather bass-heavy, at the expense of tonal balance throughout the frequency range. But for the price, this is a compromise many will be happy to accept. The bass adds a lot of energy to songs and makes listening undemanding. It is not suitable for all genres of music, but if you love dance, hip-hop or rock, it will definitely be to your liking.
The JBL CLUB 950NC are decent Bluetooth over-ear headphones with ANC. They look good, feel sturdy, and are comfortable enough to be worn for long listening sessions. They have a balanced and versatile sound profile, suitable for a wide range of genres and content, from country to hip-hop.
If you want to adjust the sound of the headphones, you can tweak the audio via parametric equalization or presets in the attached app. Unfortunately, despite ANC, the noise reduction is only okay and does not contribute to a quieter bus or plane ride. The built-in microphone is also very disappointing and the voice is distorted, unnatural and difficult to understand.
The JBL E65BTNC are above-average over-ear headphones for everyday use. These wireless headphones are an upgrade over the similarly designed JBL E55BT due to noise cancellation and better build quality. The ANC function is good, but a bit disappointing compared to other high-end headphones.
On the plus side, the audio playback is good and the wireless range is surprising. The JBL E65BTNC are comfortable over-ear headphones similar to the E55BT. The earcups are well padded, but strangely the earcup is a bit smaller than before, which makes them feel a bit narrower for larger ears.
The left earcup has a micro-USB port on the top edge for charging. At the bottom are buttons for operation, noise cancellation and playback. Long presses of the volume up button can skip ahead one track. With the volume button you can also go backward. The power and noise-canceling buttons have an identical shape that may take some getting used to.
The volume and playback buttons are a bit thinner and much closer together. This means that it is not easy to get lost, even if we pressed the volume button down instead of up a few times. A small blue LED indicates the presence of a Bluetooth connection, while a white LED indicates that noise cancellation is on.
The JBL E55BT Wireless are wireless headphones with a rather versatile sound profile. They have a sleek design with good sound and a comfortable design. They are lightweight but decently built and fairly easy to use. They work well for most applications, but they do not screen well enough in very noisy environments and are not the best headphones for movies or games.
They are almost identical to the JBL E45BT Wireless, but have over-ear rather than on-ear earcups. The headband is relatively thin, and the oval earcups are well padded and relatively well made. Some eye-catching colors are available, such as the red version we tested, but there is also a more discreet all-black version that some might prefer.
The JBL CLUB 700BT are Bluetooth on-ear headphones suitable for most purposes. They have a high-quality look and feel, are quite comfortable and have an elegant retro design thanks to the exposed cables and metal hinges. The balanced sound profile is suitable for a wide range of genres and content and can be fine-tuned via the parametric equalizer in the companion app.
The battery life of nearly 55 hours on a single charge is excellent, and they can be used passively with a standard audio cable when the battery runs out. When used wirelessly, they have a microphone built into the headphones themselves, but they also have an inline microphone that allows calls to be answered even when using the headphones passively, which is very useful.

The JBL E45BT Wireless are excellent mixed-use wireless headphones, similar to the JBL E55BT Wireless but designed as on-ear headphones. They have very good battery life and excellent wireless range, as well as satisfactory, balanced sound. Unfortunately, the build quality, while good, seems a bit cheap, and the headphones do not offer the best isolation for noisy environments.
Also, they are not as comfortable as the JBL E65BTNC over-ear headphones. The JBL E45BT have a fairly comfortable on-ear fit, but not enough for long listening sessions. The small earcups are discreetly padded, but can restrict the top of the ears, which, combined with the moderately stiff fit, leads to a bit more listening fatigue than the JBL E55BT Wireless.
There is nothing wrong with the construction of the JBLs. The plastics that make up most of the headphones are a bit cheap and a bit flimsy, but the Live 650BTNCs are still quite sturdy. The moving parts move freely and there is no squeaking or creaking of the chassis when placed on the listener’s head.
The durable fabric inside and outside the headband is also of good quality. It should prove durable and is different enough from the usual faux leather to make the Live 650BTNC look vaguely interesting. Faux leather is also found in the memory foam ear cushions, but we would not have thanked JBL for offering fabric-covered ear cushions.
JBL offers a variety of headphones for different purposes. They generally have a balanced sound, but you can customize most of them with the companion app if you want a slightly different sound. JBL headphones may not be as comfortable as those of other popular brands, such as Bose and Sennheiser, and there are no models aimed specifically at audiophiles, but their colorful design is packed with unique features, such as music sharing, that make JBL a great brand for everyday casual headphones.
