The EarFun Air S are true wireless earbuds with ANC function and a great sound.

The name EarFun may sound frivolous and lightweight, but don’t let it fool you. The new EarFun Air S true wireless ANC earbuds may be fun to listen to, but they’re also seriously good and offer great value.

EarFun was set up in 2018 by a group of industrial designers, acoustic engineers and music fans to create next-generation wireless audio devices. The team behind the EarFun Air S claims it is driven by a passion for music and a commitment to delivering solutions that use the latest technology to improve sound for audio products. That’s no idle boast.

At the heart of these stylish earbuds is a Qualcomm QCC3046 SoC (system on a chip) that offers ANC (Active Noise Cancelation), cVc, and support for aptX and AAC audio codecs for maximum compatibility with iOS and Android devices. Qualcomm owns the Bluetooth market and is doing a great trade selling customizable chips to makers like EarFun, who tune the system to deliver a sound they think their customers will love.

These lightweight earbuds have a stalk design and are incredibly light and comfortable to wear. The finish on the charging case isn’t as luxurious as Bang & Olufsen, but it’s plenty good enough and offers the choice of charging using a USB-C cable or a wireless charging mat. It takes around two hours to fully charge the EarFun Air S via USB or three hours on a Qi-compatible charging mat.

A full charge of the EarFun Air S can provide six hours of listening time with the ANC function turned off or around five hours with noise canceling engaged. The charging case can hold up to 24 hours of backup charge, which means 30 hours of playing time before the case needs to be recharged.

A selection of differently sized silicone ear tips is included with the EarFun Air S, and the fit is comfortable, forming an excellent acoustic seal for the ANC to work its magic. The noise canceling efficiency of the EarFun Air S is pretty good, although I don’t think I’d say it was best in class, but at the price it’s good enough.

Each earbud has a touch-sensitive zone that can pause music, skip tracks, answer phone calls and adjust volume levels. These controls can be changed using the excellent EarFun smartphone app, which is available for iOS and Android devices. The app can be used to update the earbud firmware whenever EarFun releases a new version. In addition, the app can adjust the EQ response of the earbuds, switch ANC on and off. It also has a gaming mode that reduces the latency of the earbuds to just 100ms. This makes watching videos and playing games more enjoyable because the picture and sounds are always in sync.

When it comes to sound quality, the EarFun Air S earbuds are excellent. The sound is fulsome without a hint of background hiss. The bass is splendidly fat while still being controlled. The mid-range is very slightly recessed, but that’s no bad thing. Meanwhile, the treble is clear and doesn’t get overexcited even at higher volumes. I auditioned the earbuds by listening to the latest album from Haitian-Canadian musician Wesli. The album Tradisyon was an excellent test for the bass ability of these super little earbuds. Give it a listen!

Overall, the EarFun Air S’s sound isn’t entirely as controlled and focused as the Jabra Elite 5 that I reviewed recently, but for the money, the sound of the EarFun Air S is excellent and a tad more exciting. The volume levels are also good and loud enough to drown out loud external sounds.

There are plenty of extras to enjoy with the earbuds. For a start, there’s cVc noise canceling for cutting out distracting sounds when making phone calls. The earbuds also support Bluetooth multipoint, which means you can have the EarFun Air S connected to two devices simultaneously. One device might be for listening to music, while another could be a work phone for taking phone calls. As soon as a call comes in, the user can accept the call and the music will pause while the call goes ahead. It’s a handy feature.

Verdict: The EarFun Air S are a fabulous pair of true wireless earbuds with ANC for canceling unwanted sounds. The chipset at the heart of these earbuds is excellent, making for a superb sound with many extra features. The overall sound is impressive and suits a wide range of music. For those who like to tweak their EQ, the EarFun app offers four presets and a customizable 5-band graphic equalizer. If you’re looking for a great pair of true wireless earbuds with ANC and excellent sound, the EarFun Air S are well worth a look.
