The video game company is going all in on its new virtual reality headset, according to Bloomberg.

Sony is hoping that its new PlayStation VR2 headsets , coupled with increased PS5 availability , will lead to a big 2023 for its gaming division. The company ordered 2 million of the virtual reality headsets and is planning to market them along with a PS5 push, once production constraints ease early next year, Bloomberg reported Monday.

It has yet to announce the price or release date for the new headsets, but they are not stand-alone devices and will require a PS5 to work. The next-gen console currently sells for $500, and Bloomberg speculated that the VR2 headsets could cost nearly as much.

The VR2 features a 110-degree OLED display, along with foveated rendering and eye tracking. Advanced components in the device could help to drive up the price, Bloomberg noted.

It'll be Sony's second foray into VR gaming, having released the $400 Playstation VR for the PS4 in 2016. That device sold 5 million units, according to Forbes.

Facebook parent company Meta has long been the leader in VR headsets. Its stand-alone Quest 2 , which also starts at $400, is one of the most popular VR sets on the market, and market researcher IDC reported that it sold 2.8 million units in its first quarter of availability.

Sony is betting that the VR2 will sell almost as well, even though consumer spending has shrunk considerably since fall 2020, when the Quest 2 launched.
